Fubara instructs admin leaders to oversee local governance in Rivers

The Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has told the Heads of Local Government Administration to take over running the 23 local government areas (LGAs) in the state.

In a broadcast on Tuesday, Fubara also wished the outgoing chairmen good luck in their future endeavors.

Tensions had been high in the state since Monday because the terms of the elected chairmen and councilors had ended. A Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt had ruled against extending their terms by six months.

Some youths had taken over the LGA offices, saying the chairmen and councilors should not return to work on Wednesday. The police stated they were ready to handle any problems arising from this situation.

In his broadcast, the governor praised the outgoing LGA Chairmen and Councillors for their dedication and thanked them for completing their terms.

He said: “I want to acknowledge and commend the dedicated services of the outgoing elected Local Government Chairmen, Vice Chairmen, and Councilors whose tenure ended on June 17, 2024, as provided by the Law.

Thank you for your sacrifices and commitment to public service and our dear Rivers State. Congratulations on completing your tenure and best wishes for your future endeavors.”

The governor also instructed the Heads of Local Government Administration in the 23 LGAs to take charge.

“As we ensure the constitution of Nigeria is upheld and maintain law and order, I direct the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to provide leadership in their respective LGAs.

They should take charge of the Councils immediately with renewed energy and be ready to serve, awaiting further instructions.

I assure the people of Rivers State that we will continue to defend you, provide infrastructure, healthcare, quality education, and welfare services for everyone.”
