Sanusi Recognized by NBA as the Emir of Kano Amidst Kano Emirate Conflict

The fight for control of the Kano emirate continues, but the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has acknowledged Muhammadu Sanusi II as the legitimate ruler.

Many influential people in Kano, including district heads, council chairmen, commissioners, and citizens, see Sanusi as the rightful emir. The NBA reinforced this by inviting him to their annual conference in Kano.

The event, held at the Amani Event Centre, was attended by key figures such as the President of the National Industrial Court, Hon. Justice Benedict Bakwaph Kanyip, NBA President Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, and the Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Aboki. This was the first time the NBA’s annual conference was held in the northern region.

The NBA invited Emir Sanusi to give his royal blessing and address the attendees. They did not invite Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, recognizing that he was dethroned by the new Kano chieftaincy law of 2024. The court case about this was postponed due to a strike by labor unions.

Emir Sanusi, through his representative Mahe Bashir Wali, welcomed the participants and highlighted Kano’s rich cultural and commercial history. He said that the conference’s theme, “Administration of Justice in Nigeria: Challenges and Reforms,” was important because justice is necessary for peace and development.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf saw the conference as a chance to challenge the NBA on conflicting court orders regarding the Kano emirate issue, which he believes is a state matter. Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Bappa Bichi, the governor urged lawyers to be honest with their clients, even when the truth is hard, rather than pursuing actions outside the law.

The governor emphasized that upholding the rule of law and comprehensive judicial reforms are essential for improving justice in Nigeria.

Barrister O.M Femi, speaking to journalists, said the NBA is aware of the situation and believes the court’s decision will prevent future conflicts. He asserted that Muhammadu Sanusi II is clearly the current Emir of Kano, as demonstrated by his recognition at the NBA conference.
